Salabrasion is a procedure that is centuries
old, but is a method that is still sometimes
used today to remove tattoos. The tattooed
area is injected with a local anesthetic
in order to numb the area. After this is
done, a solution of tap water dipped in
table salt is applied. Similar to dermabrasion,
an abrasion device is then used to vigorously
abrade the area.
The pigments of most tattoos are deep within
the dermis and in order for the tattoo to
be removed, the skin and all the ink must
be removed with it. Salabrasion removes
these layers of skin through manual abrasion,
but because the ink can be so deeply imbedded
in the layers of the dermis, the abrasion
can lead to permanent scars. While Salabrasion is effective, there are other safer
procedures that can lead to less scarring. |
