Dermabrasion is one method that can be
used for tattoo removal. This method involves
spraying a small portion of the tattoo with
a freezing agent. Once the area is frozen,
the tattoo is abraded with a rotary abrasive
instrument. This causes the skin to peel
and fall off. Once this occurs, the skin
will heal by growing new layers.
The pigments of most tattoos are deep within
the dermis and in order for the tattoo to
be removed this skin and all the ink must
be removed with it. Dermabrasion removes
these layers of skin through manual abrasion,
but because the ink can be so deeply imbedded
in the layers of the dermis, the abrasion
can lead to permanent scars.
Bleeding is likely to result from the dermabrasion procedure
so dressings are immediately applied to
the affected area. The area will heal, but
depending on the size and shape of the tattoo,
it could become permanently scarred.
